Embedded License Models

Embedded license models are intended for use with software as well as intelligent hardware devices. FlexNet Embedded hosts can be standard software hosts as well as devices and servers.

Devices typically have limited memory and network connectivity, and are manufactured in a variety of types, with different licensable features.

These hardware devices have two license sources to enable their feature set.

A pre-installed license enables the device’s default features.
An additional license enables the features specific to a particular device model. For example, a manufacturer can create a basic camera model with a pre-installed license, and then create any number of additional models in the same line that use the same hardware as the basic camera, but include additional licenses that enable each model’s features.

The following table describes the four embedded license models that are delivered with FlexNet Operations:

Embedded License Models

Embedded Models

Description

Embedded Counted

License rights authorize a limited number of instances of a device feature set, identified by a unique device ID or host ID.

Embedded Uncounted

License rights authorize an unlimited number of instances of a device feature set, identified by a unique device ID or host ID.

Named User Licensing

Auto-provisioned model that eliminates borrow period for served devices.

Concurrent User Licensing

Auto-provisioned model for any served device.

Note:Models were added as a convenience for those who want to mimic user based licensing scenarios with Cloud Licensing Service.

For producers who use FlexNet Usage Management, FlexNet Operations also supports metered license models. Metered license models reflect licensing scenarios where usage is flexibly tracked and reported so that, while firm limits can still be enforced, end users can consume capacity or counts and later reconcile payment based on their actual usage. (See About Usage Management for an introduction to usage management.)

Note:Embedded license models are only available for software publishers and device manufacturers who use FlexNet Embedded.
