Setup: Key Concepts

Publishers and Publisher Identities

Before FlexNet Embedded can be used, a publisher and identity must be set up on the FlexNet Operations Producer Portal. A publisher identity is binary data that contains a publisher or producer name and encryption data. The publisher owns the license and validates it; the identity secures communication between the back office and the device.

Revenera supplies each publisher with a unique name and a series of five publisher keys. The keys cannot be regenerated or duplicated.

The publisher can create any number of identities, each providing a different level of security for different classes of devices or licenses. For example, a line of high-end devices may require higher security than a line of low-end devices. When an identity is created, a digital signature algorithm is selected to prevent forgery and tampering on the device.

Products and Features

Products—hardware or software—are packages of features that can be sold by a producer. A feature is a software functionality or set of functionalities. Feature definitions are created in the FlexNet Operations Producer Portal that correspond to product features defined in the code. Entitling a Customer Account

You entitle a customer account to a product linked to one or more FlexNet Embedded license models, then you license the product. For more information about entitlements, refer to Getting Started with Entitlement Management.
