License Servers: Key Concepts
FlexNet Embedded License Servers
The FlexNet Embedded license server communicates with FlexNet Operations to manage devices and product features for a collection of served devices. If a FlexNet Embedded license server is used, served devices connect to this server rather than connecting directly to FlexNet Operations.
The FlexNet Embedded license server provides functionality for serving and monitoring a counted pool of licenses for intelligent device or software clients. The license server application administers licenses, enforces usage count, and provides served license status information in conjunction with client code that incorporates FlexNet Embedded licensing.
FlexNet Embedded license servers can be hosted in the Revenera cloud (Revenera’s Cloud License Service must be purchased separately) or locally deployed in a customer’s enterprise; the hosting approach depends on the account’s deployment needs. The following figure shows the FlexNet Embedded license server’s role in the FlexNet Embedded architecture.
Mapping Additional Product Entitlements to a License Server
Additional product entitlements are mapped to a FlexNet Embedded license server the same way they are mapped to a FlexNet Embedded standalone device. When the server activates with FlexNet Operations, its additional product entitlements can be served to local devices. Licenses for additional products can also be removed from a license server.
Viewing Served Devices
Served devices refers to FlexNet Embedded devices that are managed by a FlexNet Embedded license server. In FlexNet Operations, served devices are read-only entities.
For a FlexNet Embedded license server deployed in the customer’s enterprise, served device data is only available when the server is syncing with the FlexNet Operations back office. License servers hosted in the Revenera cloud automatically sync with the back office.
