About Device Status

FlexNet Embedded device status is indicated on various pages of the Producer Portal.

Device Status for Standalone Devices and Servers

The state of a device or server is indicated by its status in the devices list of the search results, and its default view for a device or server page. A device or server’s status can be ACTIVE, RETURNED, or OBSOLETE.

The status of a device affects the types of operations you can perform on that device.

Active—An active device can be the target for any normal operation (like activation, download, and return).
Returned—When a device is returned, its licenses can be moved to a designated device or, if no target device is provided, those licenses are returned to the pool. The returned state is permanent; returned devices cannot be made active again.
Obsolete—When a device is made obsolete, its licenses are unmapped and returned to the pool, and the device is unable to acquire licenses. The device ID of a device that is made obsolete also changes to reflect its status. FlexNet Operations appends -OBSOLETE-<datetime> to the end of the device ID value. The obsolete state is permanent; obsolete devices cannot be made active again.

Device Status for Served Devices

The status of served devices appears in the same locations on the Producer Portal, but it is not managed on the Producer Portal. (You cannot manually make a served device obsolete.) The possible status values for a served device include normal, returned, dropped, and expired.

Normal—Served device is operating and currently managed by its parent FlexNet Embedded server.
Returned—Served device still belongs to the FlexNet Embedded server, but has returned all its licenses to the entitlement pool.
Dropped—Served device has been manually dropped by a user on the FlexNet Embedded server. (Dropped device licenses return to the entitlement pool.)
Expired—Served device’s features have expired and the device has not checked in with its parent FlexNet Embedded server.
